5 years ago, Debbie Dunn,voluntarily dropped off Team USA,because her drug test " A" sample came back positive for PED's. Dunn had aroused some suspicion due to her remarkable performances over the last year where previously she had been somewhat lackluster and mediocre at best.I posted an interview from REAL SPORTS/HBO with Kellie White, on my group Facebook page,who was suspended for testing positive for PED's and freely admitted that she did. One thing White said in that interview sticks with me.Paraphrasing here-"If I wanted to keep up and be competitive what choice did I have". That statement intimates that she aint the only one or is she? A lot of noise was made about Florence Griffith Joyner and her sister in law Jackie Joyner Kersee during 1988.NO substantial evidence was forthcoming and they tested negative,but you still have folk dragging Florence's name thru the mud...remember it was Kellie Whites' coach who introduced her to Victor Conti,Steve Reddick was Debbie Dunn's coach...Bobby Kersee dont play that.Now we have Tyson Gay,Asafa Powell,Sherone Simpson,Veronica Campbell Brown( since vindicated).....etc
In any competitive arena,EVERYBODY is looking for an edge over their opponents,and I'm no different. For me my drug of choice is-wait for it-KNOWLEDGE. Yup good old fashioned brainwork.....I'm not giving away anything here,but I research successful programs/coaches and modify them for my athletes...and it works. From all of these cases involving PED's,the coaches are at the bottom of it...looking for the EASIEST,QUICKEST way to get an edge over their athletes main comp. Why work hard when all ya gotta do is take a little blue/red pill,inject yourself,or smear on some cream-PRESTO CHANGEO-you've changed into the INCREDIBLE HULK or THE FLASH( depending on your event-there have been more weightlifters,throwers and wrestlers busted for taking PEDs than track folk @ the Olympic level).
Let's face it cheating is nothing new and as long as their is competition it's not going anywhere.But as a coach,if I have to cheat to win,then its time for me to quit and do something else........ciao

Keeping it on the LoLo
Cheerio sports fans,
Here's a question for ya.Name the Gold medalist in the 100m hurdles for 96,2000. If you dont know the answer off the top of your head,dont feel bad. A lot of pundits and armchair quaterbacks are dumping on my Diva LoLo Jones because of all the press she is getting while Dawn Harper the Gold medalist from Beijing is getting nada. I have everything from-"It's because Harper is darker than Jones,Jones looks more feminine than Harper,on ad infinitum. The truth is LoLo got a better agent/agency than Dawn,simply put. While Dawns' agent is the Emmanuel Hudson of HSI,I think that since Dawn dont train with the HSI folks he aint gonna be to worried(could that be why Carmelita J has a different agent....and she aint lacking for coverage...check out last months' issue of ESSSENCE and ESPN magazines).
Dont hate on Ms Jones,she didnt create all this madness.Remember she was the #1 hurdler in da world going into Beijing.While Dawn had a pretty good career at UCLA,LoLo was NCAA champion from LSU in her collegiate days. And we all know what happened in the finals,no need to rehash the tale,otay.From what I can see, or have read girl friend is somewhat humble and I know a lot of folk would just throw in the towel considering what she been thru the last couple of years and early on in her life.
Now why did I bring up 96,2000.........well there was a young lady by the name of Gail Devers who was around at that time and remember what happened to her in 92........hit the 9 and 10 hurdles and went flying on the track......going into the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics the world spotlight was on Gail.....sound familiar? The 92 winner Katerou of Greece( think thats her name) didnt make it to the finals in 96 which was won by Ludmila Engquist...Gail finished 4th....but Gail got more attention than Olga Shisigina from Kahzikstan in Sydney who won gold,whilst Ms D didnt make the finals....c'est la vie.So winning the gold medal dont guarantee you get all the glitz and glamour
The lesson here is this sport doesnt get the props it should and when we are in the limelight,its because somebody popped a pill,took a shot or smeared some cream on their arm(more on that later). So let's give all our athletes some love be they first or dead last....works for me....Ciao
